Emergencies. Situations that are often life-threatening. In that critical window between the scene and the A&E Department, paramedics carry more than equipment — they carry hope, urgency, and sometimes, unspoken truths.\n\nIn my lifetime, I have been conveyed to A&E by ambulance five times. So when I read the list below, I could personally relate to some of them.\n\nLet’s explore these “dark” tales together.\n\n1. Creepy Silence\nWhile the ambulance races through traffic with sirens screaming and lights flashing, inside — it can be disturbingly quiet.\nPS: I remember feeling a strange sense of peace during those rides.\n\n2. Time Crawls\nParamedics say time behaves differently during emergencies. Seconds stretch. Minutes feel endless.\nPS: I experienced this in real time. It is surreal.\n\n3. Sudden Drops\nA patient may appear stable one moment — then suddenly crash. No warning. Just numbers dropping.\n\n4. They Already Know\nWithin minutes, experienced paramedics often sense whether a patient will make it to the hospital alive.\n\n5. Apologies\nSome patients, even while fighting for their lives, keep apologizing — for being a burden, for causing trouble, even when it isn’t their fault.\n\n6. Discharged at Scene\nNot every emergency ends in a hospital admission. Many cases are assessed, treated, and safely discharged on the spot.\n\n7. Probably the Last Time\nWhen families watch the ambulance doors close, they never truly know if that was the last time they saw their loved one.\n\n8. Reset for the Next Call\nParamedics clean the blood, sterilize the equipment, reset everything — and within minutes, they are ready again.\n\n9. The Silence After\nThe hardest part is not the chaos of saving a life.\nIt’s the silence after the sirens stop.\n\nHealthcare is not just science.
