As much as there are multiple factors leading to a mental spiral, one of the most prominent factors has to be people. Why?\nWe are surrounded by people, aren't we?\n\nIt can be anyone, to be fair. It can be a nagging spouse, a backstabbing co-worker, a toxic boss, scheming friends or even relatives. There is no escape from such characters as long as we are living on this planet. But the fact is, many of us are losing sleep over the people mentioned above and we don't even realise it.\n\nIt is eating us up and draining us of energy and positivity. Worse, it affects your work, your relationships and, ultimately, your mental health.\nThe good news is, you can control how much space such a person actually occupies in your mind. You have no control over what such people say or do, but you can most certainly control how much space — and how long — you allow them to occupy in your mind.\n\nI was once very affected by such characters in various parts of my life. It was eating me from inside out. I got moody. I lost my appetite. I lost motivation. At one point, I even lost sleep.\n\nWhile the people affecting me continued living their lives, enjoying themselves and carrying on without a care, I was the unknown victim — simply because my mind kept spinning around what they had done to me or said about me. It came to a point where I had to make drastic decisions just to continue living.\n\nLet's stop here for a while.\nI was going through a very rough patch mentally, while the people who had contributed to what I was going through were probably not even affected by it. Thinking about this from another perspective: Was it worth it? Was it really worth my energy? Was it worth losing sleep over? Was it worth allowing someone else's words and actions to determine how I felt when I woke up in the morning? The answer, eventually, was no.\n\nAnd that realisation changed something in me.\nI began to understand that letting go doesn't necessarily mean forgiving someone, agreeing with them or pretending that what they did was okay. Sometimes, letting go simply means: \"I am no longer going to allow you to control my peace.\"\n\nThat is a very different thing.\nWe often talk about taking control of our lives. But sometimes, control doesn't mean changing our circumstances. Sometimes, it means changing what we give our attention to.\n\nYou cannot stop your boss from saying something you dislike. You cannot stop a colleague from gossiping. You cannot stop a friend from betraying your trust. You cannot stop a relative from making insensitive comments. You cannot control what people think about you. And you certainly cannot control what people say about you when you are not around.\n\nBut you can decide whether you are going to replay that conversation 50 times in your head. You can decide whether you are going to allow one person's opinion to define your self-worth. You can decide whether you are going to spend the entire night thinking about something that happened five minutes ago.\n\nAnd you can decide when to say: \"Enough. I have given this person enough of my mind.\"\n\nThat doesn't mean the hurt disappears immediately. It doesn't.\nSome wounds take time. Some situations require boundaries. Some relationships need distance. And sometimes, professional help and the support of people we trust are necessary. There is absolutely no shame in asking for help when things become too heavy to carry alone.\n\nBut one thing I have learnt through my own journey is this: You don't have to attend every argument that your mind invites you to. Not every comment deserves a response. Not every action deserves your reaction. Not every person deserves permanent access to your mental space. And not every battle needs to be fought.\n\nYour mental health is too precious to be handed over to someone who doesn't even realise they are affecting you.\nSo the next time someone gets under your skin, take a step back and ask yourself: \"Do I really want to give this person another hour of my life?\" If the answer is no, then slowly take your mind back.\n\nFocus on what you can control. Your response. Your boundaries. Your choices. Your environment. The people you allow close to you. And most importantly — where you choose to place your mind.\nBecause sometimes, protecting your mental health isn't about changing the people around you. It is about changing how much power you allow them to have over you.\n\nAnd that is something you can manage.\n\nKeen to learn more about Mental Health?
