On the surface, they may look fine, but inside they are dealing with stress from studies, peer expectations, family issues, and uncertainty about the future.

Singapore’s education system has opened many doors, but it has also created intense pressure for some youths. Many feel that if they do not perform well academically, they are already falling behind. Added to that is peer pressure, especially through social media, where young people constantly compare themselves to others. Some also lack strong family support, making it harder for them to cope when life becomes overwhelming.

Mental resilience is not about pretending to be strong or hiding emotions. It is about learning how to manage stress, recover from setbacks, and continue moving forward even during difficult times. It is a skill that can be developed over time.

One important step is learning to speak up. Many youths keep everything inside until it becomes too much. Reaching out to someone trusted — whether a parent, teacher, counsellor, mentor, or friend — can make a real difference. Sometimes one honest conversation can lighten a burden greatly.

Healthy routines also matter. Proper sleep, exercise, managing screen time, and taking breaks are not small things. They help regulate emotions and improve mental clarity. Youths should also understand that failure is not the end. A poor result, rejection, or setback does not define their future.

Through my own experience, I always remind youths that resilience is not built in comfort. It is built through challenges, reflection, support, and growth. Our youths have tremendous potential. With the right support and mindset, they can rise above pressure and become stronger because of what they have overcome.

If you or someone you know is struggling, reaching out is a sign of strength. A conversation can make all the difference.

Mindline by Institute of Mental Health Singapore
Hotline: 1771 (Toll-free)
WhatsApp: 6669 1771

Samaritans of Singapore Limited (SOS)
Hotline: 1767 (Toll-free)
WhatsApp: 9151 1767

If you wish to pursue mental health, do speak to me about our Graduate Certificate in Mental Health at allan@csmacademy.edu.sg ",null,"https://cdn.sanity.io/images/l7otvznt/production/312e4c07b386b06438a35e05e607197a244e5a7f-1920x1920.jpg","2026-04-24T01:54:00.000Z","mental-resilience-for-youth","Mental Resilience for Youth",1785984931250]
