Advanced Diploma in Biomedical Science
Deepen your expertise in biomedical science with advanced training in microbiology, physiology, biochemistry, and genetics.
Overview
The Advanced Diploma in Biomedical Science provides in-depth knowledge and skills, building upon the foundation of the Diploma. It focuses on critical thinking, innovation, and design thinking to meet the evolving needs of the biomedical, pharmaceutical, and environmental sectors.
This program focuses on skills development and employer-led knowledge acquisition in areas such as technology exchange, entrepreneurship, and health & safety, developed through business planning exercises and simulations.
Key Objectives
- Extend knowledge of key biomedical disciplines: Microbiology, Physiology, Biochemistry, and Genetics.
- Develop advanced laboratory skills including molecular biology techniques.
- Prepare graduates for technical and research roles in the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries.
Curriculum
The course comprises 6 modules.
Course Modules & Synopsis
1. Microbiology Extends knowledge from the introductory module, relating structure to function. Topics include bacterial growth and death, isolation and characterization, control methods (antibiotics, sterilization), and genetic exchange (conjugation, transformation, transduction).
2. Physiology Extends the study of human physiology to the cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, urinary, and reproductive systems. Integrates with biochemistry, metabolism, and genetics for a holistic view.
3. Biochemistry Relates biological molecule structures to cellular function. Covers metabolic pathways (glycolysis, TCA cycle, electron transport), energy storage/biosynthesis, nucleic acid functions (replication, transcription, translation), and enzymology.
4. Genetics & Molecular Biology Introduces modern molecular biology concepts capabilities and techniques, including PCR, sequence analysis, and genetic diseases. Includes practical sessions on DNA purification, restriction digestion, and gene expression control.
(Note: The full curriculum consists of 6 modules. The above list highlights the core advanced specializations described in the course information.)
