Overview

The Diploma in Biomedical Science is designed to provide students with state-of-the-art knowledge and skills, fostering critical thinking and innovation. The program is tailored to meet the needs of the existing and emerging biomedical industries in Singapore and beyond.

It targets career opportunities in biomedical, pharmaceutical, environmental monitoring, public health, agrochemical, and food sectors. The curriculum emphasizes skills development, technology exchange, entrepreneurship, and health & safety, preparing graduates for the dynamic industry requirements.

Curriculum

The course comprises 6 modules.

Course Modules & Synopsis

1. Cell Biology The wide variety of living organisms will be described, including prokaryotes and eukaryotes, bacteria, fungi, protozoa, plant cells, animal cells, and viruses. The module considers cell types, cellular evolution, ultrastructure, and function, relating them to infection and health matters.

2. Introductory to Anatomy & Physiology Introduces the anatomy of the human body and explains how body systems carry out distinct, coordinated functions. Students will study basic anatomy, the skeletal system, the muscular system, the nervous and sensory systems, and the endocrine system.

3. Introductory to Biochemistry Introduces the processes and components making up life at the molecular level. Basic structures of key molecules (proteins, nucleic acids, lipids, carbohydrates) are described and related to biological function, aiding understanding of normal and disease states.

4. Introductory to Microbiology Microbiology studies organisms too small to be seen with the naked eye. This module introduces the topic, covering both pathogenic microbes that cause disease and the beneficial activities of microbes in the environment and biological applications.

5. Personal & Professional Development Provides an introduction to written and oral skills, analytical and critical thinking, design, and entrepreneurial skills. These outcomes are developed further to ensure graduates are valuable to biomedical industries.

6. Introductory Biomedical Science Specialisms Introduces sub-disciplines like Clinical Chemistry, Haematology, Serology, Clinical Immunology, and Pathology. Students learn the scientific areas of focus for each and their integration in hospital settings for diagnosis and health improvement, including medical terminology.


Entry Requirements

Minimum Academic Requirements

  • GCE ‘A’ level with at least 3 passes or equivalent; OR
  • GCE ‘O’ Level holder with a minimum age of 30 at the point of application and 8 years of working experience.

English Language Requirement

  • GCE ‘A’ Level pass in English or equivalent.

Assessment & Graduation

Assessment Methodology

Assessments include examinations, critical analysis of laboratory reports, abstracts, business planning exercises, simulation, and case studies.

Graduation Requirements

Students must complete and pass all 6 modules.

  • Local Students: Must achieve an attendance of 75%.
  • International Students: Must achieve an attendance of 90% in any month.

Upon successful completion, the Diploma in Biomedical Science will be awarded by CSM Academy International.
